PICK A NUMBER: Bobby Hope
HAVE you got a head for figures?
Well, in our weekly feature for the 2007/08 season, we find out whether the Albion players and coaching staff have.
Every Tuesday, a member of the Baggies camp will randomly pick 15 questions to answer from a colourful selection of 40 puzzlers.
We will then put them under the spotlight.
Today, we quiz chief scout and Albion legend, Bobby Hope.
Q1: If you could buy a ticket to any event in the world, what would it be?
BH: Another World Cup final. I saw the 1970 final between Brazil and Italy in Mexico. It was fantastic. I would ideally like to see Scotland - which might be mission impossible (!) - or another British team in the final in the near future. I wouldn't mind which stadium I saw it at, as most of the big ones are world class. Saying that, it would be great at Hampden because the atmosphere the Scottish people give the place is fantastic, as they proved when Scotland played Italy recently in the Euro qualifiers. I saw the European Cup Final there, many years ago in 1960, when Real Madrid played Eintracht Frankfurt. Madrid won 7-3 and there were over 130,000 people at the game. The atmosphere was amazing.
Q5: If you were Prime Minister, what one change to the country would you make?
BH: I would bring petrol taxes down because I think that it is a big drain on the country. Most people have cars now and it seems every time extra tax is needed, it affects motorists in one way or another.
Q23: What keeps you awake at night?
BH: What jobs I've got to do and making sure I fulfil them. If you wake up during the night, these things go through your mind. Sometimes, it's hard to go back to sleep. Things always seem worse when you are lying in bed. You think you haven't got enough hours in the day to do everything. But when you get up in the morning you find your mind is clearer and you can do the jobs in hand. This is particularly the case for me at this time in the season. There are a lot of games coming at once and everything has to be organised for the scouts. We've also got the January window coming up. Having said that, this year the manager is quite satisfied with his squad so, hopefully, I won't have many sleepless nights!
Q10: Who did you have a schoolboy crush on?
BH: I can't remember that far back! This is hard. I wish I had picked another number! I didn't really have crushes. I was too into my football and sports. I was too busy for girls! Now though, I'd say Michelle Pfeiffer. I think she is very nice!
Q40: If you were cooking to impress, what dish would you select?
BH: I hope my wife doesn't read this because she would just laugh! It would probably be beans on toast! However, if I could cook, it would probably be some kind of Italian food as that is my preference. I'd have a go at an elaborate Italian dish. I'm not sure what though.
Q35: Do you own any pets?
BH: Not now. We used to have dogs when my two sons were at home, so we are talking about ten years ago. The last dog we had was a Golden Labrador called Taylor. He was a rejected guide dog and we got him from a place in Leamington where guide dogs are trained.
Q31: Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
BH: Jasper Carrot. He has a great sense of humour. I have been lucky enough to meet him a couple of times. I would also ask Sir Alex Ferguson because I knew him from our Scotland days. I played with him at amateur and international level. He also has a good sense of humour and, with the football connection, it would be a big plus. I'd also have to invite my wife, if that counts! I like Dustin Hoffman, so I'd ask him because I'm sure he could tell me some great stories from the film world. I like people with a sense of humour, if you haven't guessed, because I think it makes the world go round. I suppose I ought to ask another lady. I'd go for the comedienne Jo Brand. I've seen her on TV and she is very funny. I would ask Chris Rea to provide the music for the evening. He seems a down-to-earth chap and I have always admired his records. I've seen him a few times in concert. My last one would be Frank Sinatra, if he was still alive. He was just top. Even young people know about him. He's timeless. It sounds like a good night!
Q20: What would your superpower be?
BH: To read people's thoughts. When you meet people and they are nice to your face, you always wonder what they are really thinking. That power would solve a lot of problems!
Q15: What was your best and worst subject at school?
BH: My best was definitely Maths. Originally I was going to be an accountant, but football happened and I left school at 16. I was in the top class as I got A's. One of my best pals who came through school with me is a professor and now a heart specialist. He is actually the Scottish team doctor. My mother always said 'if you had stayed on at school, you could have been a doctor too'! My worst subject was technical drawing. I could never understand it! It just didn't interest me.
Q26: What was the first record you bought?
BH: Stand By Me, by The Drifters.
Q7: What was the last album you downloaded to your ipod?
BH: I haven't got an ipod! I buy quite a lot of music though. The last CD I bought was 'The Best of Diana Krall'. She is a Jazz singer. I recently bought Michael Buble as well. I like that type of music. I used to like Simple Minds and obviously Chris Rea.
Q2: What is your favourite ice-cream?
BH: Just plain chocolate ice-cream with a flake!
Q30: When was the last time you used public transport?
BH: A couple of weeks ago when I caught the train from Four Oaks to Birmingham for the club's Christmas party. I went up with one of our doctors, Rick Jarrams, and the physio, Richie Rawlings. I didn't get the train back because they had finished by the time we left!
Q27: Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
BH: When I'm on the phone I'm always inclined to say 'you ok pal?' I always say 'pal'!
Q29: What is your favourite item of clothing?
BH: I get some stick from Craig Shakespeare, not that he can talk, because of my cardigans! My favourite would be comfy jumpers.
On behalf of everyone here at the training ground, I would like to wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. Hopefully the team will continue its good run and we will all be celebrating something in May.
