STRIKE duo Sebastien Lake-Gaskin and Lateef Alliyu fired a goal apiece to give Albion Under-18s a 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.

It was the Baggies' first FA Premier Academy League win of the campaign following their opening-day 3-3 draw against Sheffield United.

Lake-Gaskin opened the scoring on the hour-mark, with Alliyu making the points safe five minutes later.

Albion were also buoyed by the return to action of James Hancox at centre-half after 14 months on the sidelines with shin splints.

Albion Academy coach Michael Appleton said: "It was the best youth team performance I've seen since I've been at the club - they were outstanding.

"We could have and should have been five or six up at half-time and would have been had it not been for their goalkeeper, who was excellent.

"We completely controlled the tempo of the game for 90 minutes.

"We got our reward with a couple of goals in the second-half and could have scored more.

"Every time we got the ball in the second-half we must have kept it for 20 passes or more.

"The lads also took on board all the work we did in the week on not getting caught on the counter-attack."

ALBION: Carlin, Hurst (Downing 80), Manchester, Hancox, Nardiello, Samuels, Labadie, Nichols (Sawyers 75), Worrall, Lake-Gaskin, Alliyu (Knight 70). Subs not used: Siead, Manton.
