DEAN Kiely had to be at his best back on his former Valley stomping ground to earn Albion a replay and a place in Monday's FA Cup draw.

The Baggies No.1 produced a string of fine saves, including a hat-trick of stops from Izale McLeod, to take this third-round tie back to The Hawthorns on Tuesday week.

The game started badly for the visitors as they fell behind after just 54 seconds to Zheng Zhi's strike in front of more than 2,000 travelling Albion fans.

But Ishmael Miller levelled in the 34th minute to take his season's tally into double figures and complete his hat-trick of goals in all three domestic competitions this term.

However, it was the hosts who looked more likely to score a winner after the break and substitute Chris Dickson was only denied by Kiely's heroics six minutes from time.

Tony Mowbray made four changes to his side as Martin Albrechtsen, Leon Barnett, Chris Brunt and Filipe Teixeira earned recalls to the starting XI.

The men to make way were Paul Robinson and 15-goal top scorer Kevin Phillips, who were left out altogether, while Pele and James Morrison dropped to the bench.

Albion made the worst possible start when they allowed Lloyd Sam to cross from the right for Darren Ambrose to head back across goal.

Chinese star Zhi reacted quickest to control the loose ball before spinning and firing in off the left-hand post before a minute had been played.

The Addicks had a golden opportunity to double their lead in the ninth minute when Ambrose powered forward and slid McLeod in on goal.

But the former MK Dons striker saw his shot well saved by Kiely before Sam fired the rebound well over the gaping goal.

The Charlton pressure continued when Ambrose sailed in a left-wing corner in the 13th minute.

The ball eventually fell for Zhi whose spectacular volley from 12 yards was well held by Kiely.

A neat exchange of passes between Zoltan Gera and Teixeira finally fashioned Albion's first shot on goal in the 33rd minute when the former flashed a drive inches wide from the edge of the area.

A minute later, Albion were level.

A great move that started at the back with Barnett saw Jonathan Greening spread the ball out to the left wing for Brunt.

The Northern Ireland international turned Yassin Moutaouakil inside out before seeing his pinpoint centre headed home by Miller from close range - his tenth of the season.

Addicks striker Luke Varney almost burst straight through the heart of the visitors' defence five minutes before the break and it needed Bostjan Cesar to make a crucial sliding challenge to dispossess him.

A minute later, Miller picked the ball up on the edge of the area and breezed past Paddy McCarthy and Madjid Bougherra before drilling a skidding shot just past the left-hand post from 18 yards.

Charlton then pushed forward in search of a half-time lead when Matt Holland flicked on Zhi's diagonal ball. Ambrose struck a shot from just inside the area which Kiely held low down to his left.

Mowbray made two changes at the break as Sherjill MacDonald, fresh from completing a £200,000 permanent Hawthorns switch, and Pele came on for Gera and Cesar respectively.

The change in personnel led to a swift breakaway as Brunt whipped the ball out to MacDonald on the right.

The former Dutch Under-21 international came inside to find Miller on the edge of the area and he swivelled sharply but saw his shot deflect off Bougherra and go wide.

Brunt's resulting right-wing corner curled viciously and it needed Nicky Weaver's fingertips to prevent it sailing into the far top corner.

Back came Charlton. Moutaouakil raced down the right in the 51st minute and cut the ball back for Varney, whose first-time shot forced a fine one-handed save from Kiely.

Five minutes later, Teixeira burst forward and slotted the ball through to Miller who held off Bougherra before smashing a left-footed shot just past the far post from a tight angle.

The Baggies were carved open in the 64th minute by Sam's defence-splitting pass and they again needed Kiely to make a good save low to his left to deny McLeod.

Mowbray made another change in the 67th minute as Morrison replaced the flagging Koren in the middle of the park.

Two minutes later, Varney cut inside Albrechtsen and Greening before letting fly with a low drive, which Kiely smothered.

Weary Albion were now struggling to get out of their own half and Ambrose's short corner to Sam in the 75th minute gave the lively Addicks midfielder the chance to get into the box and unleash a shot, which was blocked by Greening.

Just a minute later, Holland played McLeod in over the top and he fired in a low shot, which Kiely had to stretch to block and gather at the second attempt.

That was the Addicks striker's last touch as he made way for Chris Iwelumo in the 77th minute as part of a triple substitution by Alan Pardew.

Ambrose and Varney also went off for Grant Basey and Dickson respectively.

Six minutes from the end, Dickson got on the end of Basey's left-wing cross but his close-range header lacked real punch and Kiely did brilliantly to clutch the ball just before it crossed the line.

Kiely was in the action again in the second minute of stoppage time when he plucked Bougherra's header from Zhi's right-wing corner out of the air to force a replay
