LEON Barnett and Chris Brunt's first Albion goals saw the Baggies come from behind to end Scunthorpe's proud nine-month unbeaten league home record.

The once-again outstanding Filipe Teixeira also got in on the act with his third goal in as many games as Tony Mowbray's men bagged an impressive first win on the road this term.

The visitors found themselves a goal behind at the break after referee Graham Salisbury awarded a harsh 16th-minute penalty, which United skipper Andy Crosby coolly dispatched.

But Albion held their nerve and flew out of the blocks in the second half to wrap up victory in the first-ever league meeting between the two clubs.

Barnett levelled within four minutes of the restart and Brunt put the Baggies ahead on the hour-mark.

Teixeira gave the visitors - backed by more than 2,000 fans - breathing space with a superb third 12 minutes from time before Martin Paterson's 90th-minute strike set up a tense finish.

But Albion saw out EIGHT minutes of nerve-jangling stoppage time to move up to third.

Ishmael Miller started as a lone striker as he was restored to Mowbray's XI alongside fellow summer signings Brunt and Teixeira, who played just off the on-loan Manchester City forward.

The men to make way were Kevin Phillips and Craig Beattie, who dropped to the bench, and Richard Chaplow, who missed out altogether.

Miller came within inches of opening the scoring in the second minute as he jumped highest to head Zoltan Gera's right-wing cross just over the bar.

Four minutes later, the 20-year-old powerhouse dazzled Crosby in the penalty area with his quick feet before firing into the six-yard box, where Kelly Youga just managed to scramble it over the bar before Teixeira could pounce.

At the opposite end, Andy Butler powered in on Kevan Hurst's right-wing corner and saw his header fly just over the crossbar.

Albion soon won a flag-kick of their own, with Jonathan Greening drilled's near-post cross headed well over by Gera.

Within seconds, the Baggies threatened again but Robert Koren screwed an 18-yard volley well wide after Gera had teed him up from Greening's centre.

The game dramatically swung in Scunthorpe's favour in the 16th minute when referee Salisbury awarded the hosts a soft penalty after Butler slumped to the floor under what looked an innocuous challenge by Carl Hoefkens.

Crosby stepped forward and calmly slotted the spot-kick home to Dean Kiely's left.

A minute later, Teixeira found himself in space in the box and curled a shot past former Baggies keeper Joe Murphy and inches wide of the right-hand post.

United striker Paul Hayes beat Barnett to the ball in the 22nd minute to find Paterson and the Iron hitman swiftly turned and unleashed a 25-yard strike which flashed inches wide of the right-hand upright.

Koren laid the ball off to Miller in midfield six minutes later who charged for goal before blazing a 20-yard effort high and wide.

Paterson suddenly found himself in acres of space on the edge of the Albion box in the 34th minute but smashed his shot well over when he should at least have troubled Kiely.

Seven minutes before the break, the Baggies needed brave blocks from Paul Robinson and Koren to deny Ian Baraclough twice inside the area.

Gera then found Robinson in the box at the other end and, after the left-back saw his initial shot halted by Cliff Byrne, he volleyed the rebound over from 15 yards.

The visitors were doing all the attacking but were frustratingly struggling to find a way past a stubborn United rearguard as the half drew to a close.

Miller, however, looked set to level the scores in the second minute of stoppage time as he dispossessed Crosby before powering into the box, only to see his left-footed shot beat Murphy but rattle the near post.

United boss Nigel Adkins made a change at half-time as Izzy Iriekpen replaced Crosby.

Gera looked to surge onto Brunt's back-post cross in the 47th minute but Youga was alert to the danger and headed the ball out for a corner.

Gera then robbed Youga in the middle of the park and fed Miller, who skipped past Iriekpen and Butler before seeing his low drive well saved by Murphy.

But the breakthrough finally came from the resulting 49th-minute corner.

Teixeira managed to get a touch to Brunt's centre in the six-yard box and the ball fell kindly for Barnett who slammed home from close-range.

A minute later, Teixeira ran at the hosts' defence and threaded Miller in on goal.

But the Moston menace could not get his shot away quick enough, allowing Murphy, who needed lengthy treatment following the collision, to block.

Gera flipped a terrific ball over the top on the hour mark which caught the Scunthorpe defence sleeping, allowing Miller to burst through and fired goalwards.

Again Murphy denied the giant striker but the ball spun towards the far post where the alert Brunt slotted into the empty net.

Moments later, the ball fell to Miller again in the box who swivelled smartly, only to see his shot well blocked by Murphy.

With his side behind, Adkins made a double change in the 66th minute as Jonathan Forte and Cleveland Taylor replaced Hayes and Baraclough respectively.

A poor clearance by Barnett in the 67th minute presented Hurst with a golden opportunity to level, but he screwed his shot wide of the left-hand post.

Good work by Paterson just outside the Baggies box saw him tee up Matt Sparrow, who wastefully fired over.

But Albion looked to have killed the game off in the 78th minute when Teixeira robbed Sparrow and powered forward.

His attempted pass to Miller rebounded back to him and the £680,000 bargain buy wasted no time in drilling home inside Murphy's near post.

Substitute Craig Beattie had the chance to make it four in the 86th minute as he slid in on Gera's cross but fired just over.

United weren't beaten yet and there were anxious moments for Albion when Forte headed Hurst's cross against the post two minutes from time.

Thankfully for the Baggies, sub James Morrison reacted quickest to the rebound to clear before Forte could get in.

Beattie had another great chance to put the result beyond doubt but saw his attempted lob well caught by Murphy.

Albion gave themselves an unnecessarily nervous end to the game.

Martin Albrechtsen was caught in two minds as he defended a long ball over the top in the 90th minute and was dispossessed by Forte, who teed up Paterson for the simplest of goals.

The nerves were jangling even more when the influential Robinson hobbled off and was replaced by defensive midfielder Pele at left-back.

But that proved to be the last of the scares as Albion professionally ran down eight minutes of stoppage time to secure a deserved three points.
