THE community programme at West Bromwich Albion Football Club has been in operation for more than 13 years.

During this time, it has developed into a leading provider of Sport and Education based initiatives within the Black Country and Birmingham communities.

In more recent years the community programme has developed into a registered charity and created opportunities for thousands of young people to be part of the West Bromwich Albion Football Club experience.

Football and the brand of West Bromwich Albion Football Club are very powerful mediums and Albion community programme uses this as a vehicle to engage the next generation of future Baggies fans.

The community programme employs a team of dedicated and committed staff, who are trained to meet the highest standards and comply with current legislation and child protection procedures.

With our successful partnership with WBA Study Support Centre, we have a range a staff who specialise in specific areas of sports development and education programmes.

Through the support of our partners, from both the public, private and voluntary sectors, the community programme continues to strive to develop more innovative and quality opportunities.

Working in partnership with Albion, the local community and in line with government agenda, we aim to use sport and education to engage, enthuse and motivate our next generation.

Extra curricular clubs

Albion's community programme delivers extra curricular clubs to schools outside of the 9am to 3.30pm school day. Schools will benefit from quality grass roots coaching delivered either before or after school which can target a variety of cohorts including gifted and talented, girls only or mixed ability. This programme is run for a minimum of six weeks and can be available for up to a full academic year.

Disability football

Albion's community programme is working closely with several agencies to provide coaching to young people with disabilities. Although this is an area the scheme has been involved in for many years, we are looking to dedicate a full time officer to further develop new opportunities to support football provision for local people.

It is hoped the success of this programme will provide competitive football for people with disabilities and provide Albion with teams to represent them in competitions such as partially blind, deaf and amputee, both locally and nationally.

Inclusion programme

Using the powerful brand of Albion, the scheme has been successful in supporting and delivering initiatives to address local community issues around anti-social behaviour, gang culture, crime reduction and drug related issues.

Through both local and national agencies, football based initiatives have been delivered to young people identified 'at risk' in many Sandwell and Birmingham communities. The community programme also provides in-curriculum support to a number of Pupil Referral Units across the local community.

These initiatives led by experienced and intervention trained staff, include many football based activities as outlined in this brochure, as well as exhausting the resources of Albion Study Support centre and the education element that can be provided once the young people are engaged and enthused.

In addition to education programmes, sports coaching, leadership qualifications and healthy lifestyle accredited courses can be provided to offer support to young peoples training and employment opportunities.

Albion community programme actively pursues further partners to support the continual delivery of such initiatives. These initiatives have the primary objectives of the development of social, physical, and psychological skills of participants, and to reduce occurrences of anti-social behaviour in our local communities.

Study support centre

The state of the art ICT fully resourced Study Support Centre at Albion, supports the national need to raise educational standards. This is one of the most important challenges facing the whole country, as well as the Sandwell community.

The scheme aims to raise standards in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT Skills. We also look to improve motivation and self-confidence for pupils who are at risk, with the use of the medium of learning through football.

The Study Support Centre offers a wide range of rewards, incentives and the chance to meet professional Albion players. This is a great initiative to encourage young people to work hard and sustain good attendance. The Study Support Centre has many partnerships with both the public and private sector particularly Sandwell Local Education Authority, the DFES and is fully supported by West Bromwich Albion Football Club.

The Study Support Centre has achieved "established status" in quality in Study Support. This is achieved by providing evidence for quality work delivered in out of school hours learning. It is hoped in the near future WBA Study Support achieves advanced status in Study Support and gains the Investors in People award.

We are always eager to increase the number of young people working with us on a weekly basis and continue to deliver activities that meet the needs of people in Sandwell and the surrounding areas. This service is offered from 8am through to 8pm and can take on the form of Breakfast, Lunch or after School Clubs along with during school time.

Qualified Teachers specialising in primary and secondary education, full-time learning mentors, part-time learning mentors and a team of peer and casual learning mentors, staff the Study Support Centre. They all support the delivery of education at Albion Study Support Centre.

Citizenship

Albion's community programme supports the Study Support centre to deliver the Advantage West Midlands funded Prejudice Awareness Project. Using the brand of West Bromwich Albion FC and its positive history in the 1970's with the '3 Degrees', Study Support staff deliver a series of lessons to key stage four pupils in local high schools, exploring the subject of prejudice using the mediums of sport and popular culture. Albion's community programme then compliments the learning by delivering a coaching session to particularly highlight the importance of tolerance, respect and teamwork in the game of football.

90-Minute club

Albion's community programme and Study Support centre combine to offer schools a quality 90 minutes learning experience. The '90 minute Club' is a fantastic opportunity that combines sport with national curriculum based education programmes. Like the game of football there are two halves to this club with the first half delivered by a study support member of staff, which will include a specific pre-agreed learning programme. The second half includes high quality sports coaching from our fully qualified coaching staff. This programme can be specifically catered for all pupils' learning needs and include a specific area of the national curriculum.
